Just farting in the wind…

What’s left?

My brother filed an I-130 petition for me (and my wife and kids) to emigrate to the US. After doing a bit of research, it seems that the US immigrations processes are so far behind that it looks like it’s going to be at least 6-7 years before they process the petition. The California department that is processing the forms is currently processing forms submitted in 2001(!). And then there’s the time one will have to spend waiting for an immigration number. Since siblings are fourth preference on the waiting list, this can take another 10-15 years before a number comes available. So we’re talking maybe 20 years waiting to emigrate (IF the petition gets approved). I’m 32 years old now. I’m quite prepared to emigrate to an entirely new place and start over. Do I really want to do that when I’m 52? Also considering by then, my kids will be in their 20’s. It makes no sense. The only other option is the diversity visa lottery. Both my wife and I have entered 5 times now.

It just seems like a lost cause. I need to consider other options, especially considering that I’m getting so sick of the routine. 5 days a week I go to a job I have begun to hate. There has to be something else I can do, but I must admit that I’m at a bit of a loss right now.

Sick Schtick

There’s nothing worse than having a stomach bug. Sinus complaints I bear well, since I almost always have some form of related illness, but I just can’t handle having stomach problems. Thankfully I’ve managed to avoid the upchuck reflex, but it was close for awhile there last night. — Vomiting has to be the worst feeling in the world. I can’t speak from a woman’s perspective with child birth and all, so bear with me.

I was about to walk out the door this morning to go to work - I had a scheduled change to do - but as I opened the front door, a wave of nausea hit me, and I changed my mind. Good thing I did. I instead spent most of the day sleeping or reading my book. The change I had to do can wait till I get back to work, which will probably be tomorrow anyway.

When things get turned upside down

Things have been really weird the last few days. Especially when you’re cruising through life, wondering what’s coming next, when suddenly you get an unexpected message that confirms something that you’ve known for a few years already, but never really believed. Something that has the potential to utterly change the way that you have looked at life. Either way, if what I have had confirmed is true, or even if it’s not true, it will still change the way I look at things, and have looked at things in the past, because uncertainty will no longer be a factor.

Remodelling

I woke up a few Sundays ago with a bee in my bonnet. I was tired of our fridge sitting in the middle of nowhere, because the designated space for it in the kitchen was too small. So I pulled my thumb out my bum, and got around to doing the necessary to make the darned thing fit.

This meant I had to relocate an upper cabinet that was above the stove, demolish the lower cabinet, and cut the stove counter top to size.

It took quite awhile to complete, and I had to call in reinforcements, in the form of my father-in-law. He brought along his trusty jigsaw, and we had the counter top cut to size in short order. Fortunately I found some matching veneer lying in the garage, so I was able to restore the cut edge to its original glory.

We decided to convert the demolished lower cupboard into an open area for storing trays etc. It was a bit silly to have this large open section below the counter top.

All in all, I’m very happy with the way it turned out. At least that Sunday didn’t go to waste.

Tonsil Stones

I am not alone! Thank god.

For awhile now, I’ve been coughing up these little white stinky balls, and it’s been driving me nuts.

My doctor gave me a funny look when I mentioned it, so it was just one of those odd quirks that I lived with. Until I decided to ‘Google’ it.

They’re called tonsilloliths (or commonly, tonsil stones), and it appears to be quite a common affliction. Funny though, I’ve never ever heard of anyone else until my wife mentioned the other day that one of her students seems to have the same thing. Now it seems that the whole world has it.

I’m glad now that I have a name for it, and know that I am not alone.

I’ve lived with it for years — I used to get them when I was much younger, pre-teens, then it went away for awhile. It came back a few years ago.

I started noticing it particularly when I had a sore throat, and it was a complete revelation to me to find them growing in my tonsil cavities. Digging them out got rid of the sore throat in less than an hour. It was friggin’ amazing. So every time I have a sore throat, I check for tonsilloliths.

After doing a bit of research, it seems that they are formed from nasal mucous (and other debris) and bacteria… which kind of figures for me, since I have bad sinus problems, and have a permanent (just about) post-nasal drip.

It’s late, I’m tired

It’s really annoying when I try and implement something on the site, and I discover that my template code is faulty. Grrr. Oh well, a couple of hours of debugging solved the problem, eventually.

Today we spent an exorbitant amount of money on stuff for the house. Bought a headboard & some pedestals for the bed, a huge ass wall unit for the TV and related paraphernalia, some high back comfy office chairs (Finally! After so many damn years! I’m chucking out that fucking blue chair now!), a dining room suite, a coffee maker (been missing that sucker), and some other odds and ends. Busy busy. The stuff will be delivered sometime during the week.

Still gotta wait 2 weeks for the custom desks I ordered though. I’m not looking forward to having to dismantle all this shit again. Yikes.

Busy busy bee

Wow, I’ve been so, err… busy lately that I haven’t had time to post much. At least I’m not as physically tired as I was earlier in the week. I don’t think I’ve ever been as knackered as I was those three days.

TGIF. I’m sitting here eating my pasta and tuna salad contemplating all the stuff I need to do this weekend. Especially the frikkin’ gardening. The worst part of it is I haven’t done any kind of gardening in years, and now I need to clear away trees and bushes from the perimeter walls so that the electric fence can be installed. Ahh, the joys of living in a crime ridden country.

I roped my best friend into helping me clear away the vegetation, so hopefully it won’t take too long. I must remember to borrow my father-in-law’s saw, otherwise I’m gonna have a tough time cutting tree branches.
