Remodelling

Comments off

I woke up a few Sundays ago with a bee in my bonnet. I was tired of our fridge sitting in the middle of nowhere, because the designated space for it in the kitchen was too small. So I pulled my thumb out my bum, and got around to doing the necessary to make the darned thing fit.

This meant I had to relocate an upper cabinet that was above the stove, demolish the lower cabinet, and cut the stove counter top to size.

It took quite awhile to complete, and I had to call in reinforcements, in the form of my father-in-law. He brought along his trusty jigsaw, and we had the counter top cut to size in short order. Fortunately I found some matching veneer lying in the garage, so I was able to restore the cut edge to its original glory.

We decided to convert the demolished lower cupboard into an open area for storing trays etc. It was a bit silly to have this large open section below the counter top.

All in all, I’m very happy with the way it turned out. At least that Sunday didn’t go to waste.

A Far Cry from finished

Gad, it’s taking me a long time to get this bathroom done. But I can thankfully say that I’m almost finished. I completed the wall tiling yesterday (Sunday) evening, and I laid the worst floor tile too.

I’m taking a break tonight, cuz I’m just plain fucking sick of the damn place now.

This break is at least giving me some time to work on another project I’m designing, and no, it’s NOT a DIY project. You think I’m insane? It’s actually a web site. More details later (Much (a LOT later)).

Quite a mouthful

I almost think that I’ve bitten off more than I can chew when it comes to re-doing our bathroom. I’m just not used to this kind of physical labor, I’m a geek, damnit. The only kind of exercise I get is getting up to get another cup of coffee. I have a monitor tan, for goodness sake. What the hell was I thinking?

It took me three days (with the wife’s help) to destruct the bathroom, ie, ripping tiles off walls, and lifting the floor tiles, etc. Removing the basin & toilet didn’t take too long, thankfully.

It’s now a week later, and I’m still not finished the damn bathroom. Fortunately all the difficult stuff is complete (fitting the toilet & basin, and tiling the back wall), so the rest of it shouldn’t take me too long to complete.

We’ll see, I guess.

Bathroom Blues

Our bathroom has been looking a bit tacky of late. The previous owner had painted the tiles, and since paint doesn’t stick to a glazed surface particularly well, the paint had started to peel in places, and we just weren’t happy with the way it looked. So we decided we would re-tile. I was happy with just doing that.

Then we decided we might as well do the basin as well, since that looks grotty too, and the taps just suck. And suddenly we have a new toilet to install too. And because of that, we have to re-tile the entire floor. Gah. I have a shitload of work to do. I’ve taken a couple of days off work to get it all done.

We’re on day two of the project. So far we’ve removed 98% of the existing wall tiles, and I’ve started removing the floor tiles. What a bastard job it is to do by hand. I’m gonna go hire an electric jackhammer tomorrow, I swear. My hand is so frikkin’ sore from wielding the hammer, it’s just not funny.

  • Wall tiles – R1700.00
  • Floor tiles – R200.00
  • Removing existing tiles by hand – Priceless
