Annoyances

Our department at work is getting ever smaller. There are now exactly 2 permanent staff members left. One of our team resigned awhile back and has been contracting for the past few months, and that’s due to expire at the end of may.

Anyway, sometime last year, management hired a Dutch contractor as technical manager for our department. After about 6 months, he learned the error of his ways, and after making some changes to our infrastructure that made our admin lives more difficult, he left.

Another foreign contractor was hired to replace him. He seemed nice enough, friendly, etc, until one day last week he decided that he just had to exert his power and completely alienate and piss off the entire department.

It seems he’s one of these sociable creatures that just cannot handle being left out of things, so to make himself feel better, he set about to completely rearrange our offices and desks to suite his completely fucked up view of things. We were very happy in our little individual cubicles, with our blinds closed etc. Now this fuckwit has removed ALL the partitioning in the office, and is insisting that we have to sit in clusters, facing each other This brilliant decision was most likely arrived at without one modicum of thought towards us and our feelings, nor for the practicalities of sharing office space.

Since I sit at the bottom of the passage leading in to our offices, I can now see and be seen by everyone that enters the area. I can clearly hear other people’s conversations on the other side of the office, and noises from machines that never used to bother me are much louder too… Never mind the fact that I can no longer have a private telephone conversation.

His arguments? There is no privacy in the office! He was quite adamant about that. He even went so far as to relate a story about how he gleefully listened in to a personal conversation some woman was having at one of his previous jobs, and then butted in and offered her advice etc. Obviously the woman was peeved. And he was proud of that example! I mean, what kind of cunt must you be to do something like that? Sure, you may not have much privacy in the work place, but any decent human being would at least pretend not to hear a private conversation, and would at least feign ignorance… That at least would afford one the semblance of privacy. And the fuck you say! The south african constitution says that everyone has the right to privacy, and in the workplace, one can expect a reasonable right to privacy! So fuck your “there is no privacy in the work place” bullshit.

Shock

Considering my negativity about work the past few months, I was quite shocked when we received our bonus and increase letters yesterday.

I was quite sure that the increase would be a waste of time as per usual, and after last year’s decent 10k incentive bonus, I was not expecting to get much, if at all this year, especially considering I verbally attacked my completely incompetent boss one day on the phone awhile back (shortly after she started and was trying to assert herself), so my jaw nearly hit the floor when she told me that the bonus alone was almost double last year’s and my increase was just about an extra 20k per annum.

Speaking to my friend in the development department, he said his increase and bonus was also quite substantial, so it looks like the company is finally trying to appease the IT department as a whole.

With regards to my earlier mention about verbally attacking my boss, I must say that it is something that I have never done before, and will most likely not do again in the future, but she had made the mistake of pushing me too far with unfounded allegations etc, and I had had enough, so I lost my temper and blew up.

The world gets smaller

The world being my department here at work. When I became a staff member nearly 7 years ago, there were about 12 people, although 3 of them were in different parts of the country. A retrenchment process where we all had to re-apply for our jobs got rid of those 3, along with one or two others.

Then there were around 7 of us. Surprise surprise, another retrenchment process happened, and we had to reapply for our jobs again. And then there were 4.

A junior guy got tired of being messed around for a pitiful salary, so he resigned. And then there were 3.

Then rumours of an outsource for our department came about. And then those rumours became truth. Another colleague resigned, although they begged him to stay on, so he’s currently on contract until the end of May. And then there were 2.

While our department has gotten ever smaller, the workloads have not decreased at all.

I love the smell of resignations in the morning!

The Sounds of Silence

My leave is now over and I am back at work for the first time in two weeks. I can’t begin to describe how much I dislike this place. I used to enjoy coming to work – definitely not anymore. I owe thanks to my current boss for that.

I need to find a new job.

Demon Days

Not very many goings on lately. Work is a complete slog. I’m really hating it these days. Mainly because of my incredibly incompetent boss, but I’m not going to go into that now.

October was a very busy month – had something going on almost every weekend, crezzy man, crezzy. First up, I hosted our very first Clan get together. Wooo! Almost 30 people packed in to my house. It was good fun, and great to finally meet the people behind the players. Next time though, I’m going to have a maximum of 10 (or less) people. Things will be a lot less hectic then I think (hope).

The weekend after that was our kids’ nursery school (creche / kindergarten?) concert. They both had to attend 3 performances (of which we (ie, mommy and daddy) only attended the second one), so there was a lot of fetching and carrying going on. Fortunately the venue wasn’t too far from our home.

The following weekend was extra busy, as it was our son’s “graduation” ceremony from creche (he’s attending primary school next year), and also my brother’s wedding. Unfortunately due to the timing of the events, we had to miss the wedding ceremony – although we were there for the reception. It sucked missing the ceremony – but at least I had the opportunity to attend the legal portion of the wedding a few days earlier (long story).

This coming weekend is our first completely “free” weekend. We have no obligations to go anywhere, see anyone etc. And since I managed to get my wife addicted to Battlefield 2142, I guess that’s what we’re going to be doing most of the weekend :p

Honestly, I would prefer to watch movies at the moment – especially if the weather stays overcast and miserable. Not very likely though, I can see the sun streaming in the window on the other side of my office.

I’m not kidding – I’m sitting with 35 movies in my DVD collection that I have not yet seen. Okay, some of them are movies that I have actually seen before (on big screen), but I haven’t necessarily seen the DVD. There’s a couple that I’m definitely NOT going to watch though – mainly the kids movies, but that’s still a very small fraction of the total. :p

Part of the problem is that a lot of the movies that I want to watch I have to keep till after the kids have gone to bed, and I can guarantee you that my wife won’t watch some of them either – like my Exorcist box set that I got recently. ;) I can’t help myself. I love horror movies. :p

Do you feel lucky, punk?

The combination of Spam Karma and Referrer Karma seem to be doing the trick. I have not had my blog spammed for a couple of days now, woohoo!

Mind you, that was just about the only traffic I received, so maybe I should disable the damn things. Huh.

Actually, I don’t know what I’m complaining about. I set up this blog, not for publicity – who needs it? Not me – but to satisfy my own needs. At least I can say I’m doing something. It can’t all be work work work, now can it?

Back to work

After a really long holiday (been at home since the 5th December), I’m due back at work tomorrow (Joy!). As you can imagine, I’m really looking forward to it. Ahh well, back to the grindstone.
